| Controller for a Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
The STM technology allows visualization of conductive or semi-conductive
samples at better than atomic-scale resolution. The technique is based
on the detection of a very small tunnel current (~ 1 nA) between an
exceedingly sharp metallic tip and the sample. A control loop is used
to keep the current constant by keeping the tip at about 1 nm from
the sample. The surface is scanned along X and Y axes while recording
the height of the tip, thus yielding the topology of the sample.
SIGNAL RANGER tasks:
- Automatic approach to creating the tunnel junction
- Digital control loop to stabilize the tunnel current and tip
position
- Linearization of the current/position relationship
- Real-time compensation of the capacitive coupling (typical
noise)
- Image acquisition, real-time data compression and transmission

Multi-Channel Speech Acquisition and Processing System
To upgrade the Clarinet Merlin Receiving System (CMRS) used by the U.S. Navy, Space and Naval Warfare
Systems Command, Long Wave Inc. developed a decoder that uses the Signal Ranger DSP board provided by Soft dB.
This system is an unmanned, remote operated, shore based receiving system designed to receive coded emergency signals from the Submarine
emergency Communications Transmitter buoys. The CMRS decodes a valid message and processes the decoded message into properly formatted CMRS messages.
LongWave Inc. is ahead of its competitors because the DSP Signal Ranger board enhances the performance by as much as 10 dB.

PID Controller (Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller)
The PID Controller ( Proportional-Integral-Derivative Controller) can be easily implemented on the Signal Ranger Mk2 DSP board and the SR2_Analog16 I/O expansion board.
PID controller is often used in industrial control systems. It compares a measured value from a process with a reference set point value. The difference (or "error" signal) is then processed to calculate a new value for a manipulated process output that brings the process measured value back to its desired setpoint.
An example of a PID controller for the SR- Mk2 DSP board is available for free (LabView VIs and DSP code are also provided). The example includes a friendly PC interface that allows the real time adjustment of the P, I and D parameters.
