SmartSMS is designed to provide the best masking sound while preserving the comfort of the occupants. The precise adjustment of the masking sound is allowed by two unique features:
  • Automatic Equalization Process: This ensures the generation of the desired sound masking spectrum for the specific architectural characteristics of the building. The adjustment is quick and precise.

  • Real-Time Active Adjustment of the Masking Sound Level: The masking sound level is continuously adjusted, based on ambient noise measurement. In a busy work area, the masking sound increases. It decreases when the work area quiets down.

  • The SmartSMS is an integrated centralized DSP-based system. The controller unit integrates all the required components in a single unit: sound generator, equalization, amplification, internal clock and the active adjustment processor. The loudspeakers are thus connected directly to the unit, thereby simplifying the installation, as well as saving time and space.

Why Do Some Clients Even the Most Renowned Ones, Appreciate the Sound Masking System While Other Clients Are Dissatisfied with the Same Sound Masking System?

Because the rival sound masking systems are preadjusted for a typical acoustic environment (eight-foot ceiling, medium-quality carpet and ceiling tiles, four-inch ceiling space height, medium-density and medium-acoustic characteristics of the furniture, etc.)1. If the fitting-out of the room is different from the typical case (ceramic floor or no suspended ceiling, for example), the sound spectrum generated in the room will differ from the perfect masking spectrum. In that case, the system has to be adjusted in order to obtain the desired sound masking, not only in terms of global sound pressure level, but also in terms of spectral content.

In all rival masking systems on the market, this adjustment has to be done manually. To do the adjustment properly, i.e., to obtain the ideal masking spectrum, acoustic measurements have to be done with a one-third octave band spectrum analyzer. The levels obtained for each one-third octave have to be compared with the ideal masking spectrum values and, finally, the masking system has to be adjusted accordingly for each one-third octave. This process has to be done for every zone where the acoustic room response is different (entrance hall, open-plan offices, private offices, meeting rooms, etc.).

The adjustment of the typical sound masking system is a tedious and delicate task that requires a lot of time. Also, in almost all of the installations, the majority of the installers do the equalization by ear or, at the best, use only a sonometer to obtain the approximate global level desired without considering the spectral content of the generated sound. The result is often an inadequate sound spectrum and dissatisfied users. Also, several trial and error adjustment operations are needed. These are expensive. Because of that, clients become dissatisfied with their new sound masking system.

1The sound spectrum, generated in a room with speakers, depends not only on the quality of these and on the signal provided, but also on several parameters such as the type of suspended ceiling, the height of the ceiling space, the dimensions of the room, the acoustic characteristics of the furniture, the amount of furniture, etc. All of these parameters have an effect on the acoustic properties of the room, among others, the characteristic known as acoustic room response.
